The National Hot Rods reach the end of World Series NI this Saturday evening, May 24th, at Aghadowey Oval. The destination of the title will be decided whilst the ten qualifiers for the all important Championship of the World at Ipswich in July will also be rubberstamped.
All set to be crowned World Series NI Champion is Cork’s Jeff Riordan, who has been in blistering form since the 2024/25 campaign kicked off last July. He has built a healthy advantage in the points chart and looks set to earn the right to wear the silver roof for the next twelve months. Also hoping for a good run will be Galgorm’s Ulster Champion Shane Murray, who took a hat-trick of wins last time out at Aghadowey on Easter Monday as well as a great final win at Tullyroan last weekend.
Heading the support package is the King of Aghadowey for the budget racers in the Thunder Rods. Easily one of the most competitive sections on the local tracks, the winner could come from any angle. Irish Champion is Ballymena’s James Goldie and he could well be the man to beat, alongside recent convert to the class, Joe Largey of Glenavy. Rasharkin’s Jason Garragh, Ballycastle’s Andrew McClean, Strabane’s Adam McKinney and Kilrea’s Joshua McMullan will be amongst the others to watch.
It is also the final round of the 2.0 Hot Rods NI Points Championship, and champion elect Jordan Rochford from Portadown will be keen to finish the season in style. Antrim’s Conor Hughes, Bleary’s British Champion Drew McKeown and World Champion Adam Heatrick will be others in the mix for the win. An interesting addition to the field will be recently crowned Scottish Points Champion Charlie Hardie.
Lightning Rods World Champion Mark Corry will make his first Aghadowey appearance with the gold roof, but NI Points Champ Nigel Jackson and Irish Champion Ross Houston will be others chasing hard for the silverware.
Completing the line up are the Ninja Karts, where the local 6-11 year olds will have to contend with visiting English Champion Mason Carberry from Suffolk. Mason won the King of Aghadowey title on Easter Monday, and returns again to get more track experience under his belt ahead of July’s World Championship at the Co Londonderry venue. He also won the Best in Britain last weekend at Ipswich so is in top form. Ralph Payne also makes the trip from England with Hazel O’Connell also visiting from Tipperary. Usual local frontrunners Jack Murphy, Jaxon Cairns, Tommy Johnston and Ollie Williamson to name a few will also be in the mix.
The first race leaves the grid at 6.30pm.

The on-track action was as hot as the superb weather at Tullyroan Oval on Saturday night, May 17th, with some sensational racing served up in the sun. Ballymena’s Shane Murray took the feature event of the evening, Round 13 of National Hot Rods World Series NI, whilst The Moffett Shield for the Junior Productions fell to Dungannon’s Andrew Hawe after a great drive.
The other feature race wins on the night went to Larne’s Sam Wilson (Stock Rods), Portadown’s Steven Haugh (Superstox) and Richhill’s Robbie Barnett (Lightning Rods).
James Ginty led the opening National Hot Rods heat until he was relegated by a hard charging Adam Hylands, the local favourite taking the win over Shane Murray and James Mooney. Heat two saw Nigel McCauley take the win over Hylands, after pulling off a great outside pass on early pacesetter Ginty.
Thomas Dilly hit the front early on in the final, before losing out to the hard charging McCauley and Hylands. McCauley attracted warnings from Race Control for his over-robust defence of the lead, before edging clear to take the chequered flag. With a penalty on Nigel almost inevitable, attention switched to the battle for second where Hylands was holding off Jeff Riordan. They got themselves embroiled in backmarkers late on, allowing Murray to box them in and make an audacious swoop around the outside on the last lap to snatch the place. With McCauley demoted in the final analysis, Murray took the honours ahead of Hylands and Riordan after a superb finish.
The opening heat of the Junior Productions was busy to say the least with 18 young drivers on track, but Austin Grattan paid little heed to all that was going on behind him to lead from flag to flag for a great win over Andrew Hawe and leading star man Andrew Russell. Tony Calvin and Charlie Johnston battled hard for the lead in heat two before they tangled, seeing Calvin crash out and Johnston removed from the race as the cause of the ensuing stoppage. Once they got going again Noah Teggart took a fine win from Leyton Hughes and Russell.
The final for the Moffett Shield saw Grattan lead the way until Hawe found a way past to hit the front. Andrew reeled off the remaining laps to take an impressive victory, with Teggart and Jack Morrison filling the top three. Grattan also received an award from the Moffett family as the best white or yellow grade finisher.

A healthy field of over 20 Stock Rods took to the grid for heat one, with recent Junior Productions graduate Harry Minish stamping his authority all over the race to take a commanding win over Joe Largey and Mark Foster. Minish once again repeated the feat in heat two, taking a clear win ahead of Jamie Cardwell and Irish Champion Mark Crawford.
Minish worked his way ahead early ahead in the final , only for mechanical issues to thwart his hat-trick bid. That left Sam Wilson out front, but holding off huge pressure from Foster and Largey. With all three together, Foster’s engine let go in dramatic fashion into turn one, causing a stoppage with 5 laps to go to deal with the subsequent fire and oil spillage. On the double file restart, Wilson superbly hung on for a deserved victory over Crawford and newly crowned British Champion Siobhan Martin.
Brian Lammey sealed a fine opening heat win in the Superstox as he continued his recent good run, just holding off Neil Hyndman on the run to the flag. Heat two saw Jamie McCann take the win, just surviving a huge last bend lunge from Steven Haugh, with Hyndman in third.
Hyndman stretched clear in the final, and looked odds on to take the victory. But Haugh had other ideas, coming on really strong over the closing laps to whittle down Neil’s advantage. Where his last bender in heat two didn’t come off, this time it certainly did as he punted Hyndman wide to race through for a sensational win in the best possible style. Hyndman, McCann and World Champion Jordan Robinson completed the top places.
The Lightning Rods field was boosted by some very welcome visitors from Tipperary Raceway, and it was one of them in Ronan O’Connor who was first across the line in the opening heat. Unfortunately he was docked two places for contact during the race, handing the win to Conor Doherty over Robbie Barnett. Barnett then put his borrowed Ian McCune car to great use in heat two, taking the win having held off late pressure from Doherty and NI Points Champion Nigel Jackson.
The final saw Brian Hickey and O’Connor both have spells in the lead, before Barnett hit the front. Robbie was flying in the BMW, taking his second win of the night ahead of Irish Champion Ross Houston and Jackson.

An entertaining Saturday night at Aghadowey Oval saw some exciting racing as Garvagh’s William McFaul was crowned King of Aghadowey in the 1600 Rookie Bangers. The William Cooke Memorial Trophy for Stock Rods fell the way of Enniskillen’s Stevie McNiece after a great performance, whilst The Young Trophy for Junior Productions was won by Casey Cherry after a stirring drive around the outside.
The other feature races of the evening went the way of Bleary’s Drew McKeown in the 2.0 Hot Rods and Portadown’s Steven Haugh in the Superstox.
An excellent entry of twenty 1600 Rookie Bangers meant the track was more than busy all evening, with David Gurney leading heat one before Josh Goligher nudged him wide towards a stricken car late on to snatch the victory. Heat two was equally as hectic, with William McFaul this time overhauling early leader Aaron McGraw to take the win over Steven Bolton and Irish Champion John Goligher.
The tension was building as the King of Aghadowey final came to grid, with McFaul executing the perfect start to avoid the onslaught from behind. William continued to pull clear to land a great victory over Josh Goligher and John Goligher to end a superb evening from the formula.
Rab Preston and Sam Wilson had spells out front in the opening Stock Rods qualifier, before National Champion Jonny Cardwell pulled off a great outside move to take the win over NI Open Champion Mark Foster and Stevie McNiece. Heat two saw a dominant win from Irish Champion Mark Crawford, as he led home Darragh O’Shea and McNeice.
Two third places for McNiece gained him pole position for the William Cooke Memorial Trophy final with Crawford alongside. Stevie quickly settled into the premier position, and despite the best efforts of Cardwell in second he was able to hold his advantage all the way home. As McNiece took the victory by ten car lengths, Cardwell, Crawford, Sam McNeice and Foster filled out the places.

Novice grader Austin Grattan was the one to watch in the opening heat of the Junior Productions, holding on out front despite the best efforts of Maia Thompson from behind. As Grattan took the win over Thompson, Ryan Berry and Noah Teggart were next home. Heat two again saw Grattan out front early on, but this time it was Scottish lady racer Thompson who found a way past to take the win. Grattan held on for second ahead of an impressive drive from British Champion Casey Cherry from the rear of the grid.
Grattan and Thompson shared the front row the final, racing for The Young Trophy which has been presented by the Young and Hosie families at Aghadowey for many years now. Ryan Berry burst through from the second row to hit the front but soon had a whole posse snapping at his heels. Cherry had been shuffled down the pack early on, but he came back with a vengeance to mount a challenge for the lead on the outside line. As he swept ahead and on to a tremendous win, Irish Champion Leyton Hughes took second ahead of Charlie Johnston. Grattan and Thompson claimed the white and yellow grade awards respectively, whilst Teggart claimed the Merit Award for his fine efforts all evening.
Dungannon teenager Jake Devlin was the first to show in the first heat for the 2.0 Hot Rods, holding off the advances of veteran campaigner Colin McFarland initially. Local ace Aaron Stewart then muscled in on the action up front, trying the outside late on in an effort to claim the win. Devlin held on though for a fine victory, with James McKinney snatching second from Stewart at the line. Heat two followed a similar pattern, and this time Devlin had a much easier path to his second victory of the night, holding off McFarland and Chris Hamill at the flag.
There was an early caution period in the final for a stranded Rob Barnett on the Brown Trout Bend, and that brought the pack onto the tail of the leading Devlin. A hectic restart triggered a turn four clash, and with McFarland stranded the yellow flags came out once again. British and Irish Champion Drew McKeown went alongside Devlin at the front for the Nascar style two-wide resumption, and he quickly powered ahead to take the flag. Drew survived a post race Stewards Enquiry to hold on to what was a fine win, with Jordan Rochford and McKinney inheriting the podium slots after World Champ Adam Heatrick was docked from second to fourth for contact.
Regular raceway photographer Brian Lammey swapped his camera for his helmet to claim a superb win in the opening Superstox heat, holding off Gerard Hartley and Steven Haugh at the flag. Before the meeting new National Champion Kyle Beattie was presented to the crowd after his recent win in England, and he recorded his best finish of the night in heat two as he claimed third spot behind winner Jamie McCann and Haugh.
Hartley demoted early leader Jonathan Crawford in the final, but with four laps to go he had no answer to the pace of the flying NI Points Champion Haugh. As Steven took the flag and the silverware, McCann claimed second from World Champion Jordan Robinson, Beattie and Hartley.

Jordan Rochford’s rich streak of form continued at Tullyroan Oval on Saturday night (April 26th), the Portadown 2.0 Hot Rod driver taking another final victory in the opening round of the Hoosier Challenge Series. A dramatic night in the Junior Productions saw Antrim’s Leyton Hughes successfully defend his Golden Helmet title in style, whilst a big grid of 1300 Stock Cars saw Ballyclare’s Michael Logan race through for victory.
The Ninja Karts saw almost 30 drivers racing and there was a heat and final double for Maghera’s Jordan Davis, whilst the Thunder Rods saw Rasharkin’s Jason Darragh take an excellent feature race win.
The two graded heats in the 2.0 Hot Rods were closely fought, with Ally Neill taking a hectic opener from Shane McMillan and Callum Doak. Neill repeated the feat in heat two, rounding McMillan for a fine win with form man Jordan Rochford in third.
The final, the opening round of the Hoosier Challenge Series saw the grid formed on points from the heats. Neill hit the front, but Rochford pulled off a sublime outside line pass to take the lead and the win. Jordan also received a new tyre courtesy of Hoosier Tyres UK, with Andy Best getting the better of the places scrap to take second.
Noah Teggart got the better of a packed field of Junior Productions in a dramatic opening heat for the young stars. There was a rollover for Jake Barnett as Teggart took the flag over Ryan Berry and Andrew Hawe. Having tasted success for the first time, Teggart repeated the feat in heat two which was marred by a big back straight crash. Hawe this time took second over Austin Grattan as the lower graders dominated.
The Golden Helmet final was lined up in points order from the heats, with Teggart setting the early pace. An oil spillage from the previous race made conditions challenging, but Leyton Hughes was showing experience way beyond his years to use the wide line around the oil to catapult himself to the lead. Leyton raced clear to successfully defend his title and take the superb trophy, presented annually by the McKeown family, back home to his Antrim base. Hawe and Teggart impressed greatly in second and third ahead of Berry and Jack Morrison.

A domestic record of eighteen 1300 Stock Cars came to grid for their opening heat, including a debut for former race starter Curtis McConkey. The racing was frantic to say the least, with cautions for a loose wheel on turn four and then a track blockage on the back straight. Star man Curtis Greer burst through the chaos to take the win over Gary Freeburn and Jon McQuillan. Heat two saw debutant Neville Richardson battle with Davy Clarke for the lead, with Richardson taking a well deserved win over Clarke and NI Points Champion Matthew Milliken who had made a sterling drive from the back.
The opening laps of the final were action packed to say the least, and on lap four it was Michael Logan who raced into the lead. Having not figured in the heats, Logan put his trusty Toyota Starlet to great use to extend his advantage and take the chequered flag and the silverware. McQuillan and Graham Meek filled the podium slots after a great battle, ahead of Milliken and Irish Champion Bobbie Johnston.
Steven Bolton was the man to watch in the opening Thunder Rods heat, the former Unlimited Bangers World Champion putting his borrowed car to good use to take the win ahead of a great battle which saw Jason Darragh take second from Gareth McCrory. Brandon Kernohan led the second heat away, but he lost out to Tyler McMaster who took the victory ahead of Darragh and Mark McLaughlin.
McCrory quickly hit the front in the final, holding resolutely to the inside line and inviting his challengers to make the pass on the outside. Approaching mid distance Darragh took the bull by the horns, hit the outside and clawed his way past to record a superb victory. Andrew McLean came through for second ahead of Joe Largey, Bolton and McLaughlin.
A host of English visitors in the Ninja Karts boosted the grid to almost 30 karts, with the busy raceway leading to numerous caution periods. Somerset’s Charlie Major blasted through to win the opening heat in dramatic fashion after Jaxon York and Jack Murphy found the fence on the run to the flag. George Cooper took second, with Murphy claiming third as he slid down the wall! Jordan Davis took the win in heat two, just holding off an assault from England’s Tyler Ward. Jaxon York sneaked second on the line ahead of Ward and Mason Carberry.
The final saw the flying Davis take his second win of the night, this time powering home ahead of Cole York, Murphy, Ollie Williamson and Carberry to complete a superb night for the 6-11 year old stars of the future.

An outstanding Easter Monday of racing at Aghadowey Oval saw Randalstown’s Sam McNeice win the feature race of the afternoon, The Alan Connolly Memorial Trophy for Stock Rods. In the National Hot Rods formula, Galgorm ace Shane Murray reeled off a faultless hat-trick of wins to take the spoils in World Series NI Round 12, whilst Suffolk’s Mason Carberry successfully defended the King of Aghadowey title from a packed field of Ninja Karts. The other feature races fell to Portadown’s Nigel Jackson in the Lightning Rods and Glenavy’s Joe Largey in the Thunder Rods.
A healthy field of Stock Rods, including Scottish and Republic of Ireland visitors, took to the grid to contest the Alan Connolly Memorial Trophy, held annually on Easter Monday in memory of the champion driver from Ballymoney. Jonny Cardwell relieved early leader Adam Sloan of the lead in the opening heat, Jonny powering home to the win ahead of Sloan and Dan Shannon. The reversed grid heat two saw European Champion Robbie Armit take a flag to flag win ahead of Irish Champion Mark Crawford and Darragh O’Shea.
The final paired Shannon and Scotsman Dean McGill on the front row, with Dan taking up the running until Cardwell found a gap inside him into the Brown Trout Bend to hit the front. Many eyes were now on Sam McNeice as he made great strides towards the front, nipping past McGill to go second before pulling the same move on Cardwell to grab the lead. Sam romped home to a great success, with Cardwell and Crawford completing the line up after a competitive afternoon of racing.
Ahoghill’s Philip McCloy was the first to show in the opening National Hot Rods heat, before Shane Murray blasted ahead in his Ginetta. Murray took the win ahead of Derek McMillan and Jordan McCann, after Adam Maxwell was dropped from second to fourth by the Stewards for contact. Murray repeated the feat in heat two, this time mastering the changeable track conditions to win ahead of Simon Kennedy and Ian Riordan.
Kennedy set the pace early in the final on what was now a dry track, but Murray was again to be the master as he swooped past on the high outside line to take the lead and complete a faultless hat-trick for the afternoon. Kennedy, Scotsman James Mooney and McCann completed the major places.

A huge field of 35 Ninja Karts from right across the British Isles arrived to chase the King of Aghadowey title. Norfolk’s Elliott Lake won the opening heat for England, ahead of Eddie Fowler and defending Champion Mason Carberry. Heat two again saw Lake take the win as he impressed for a second time, with Jordan Davis and Rowdy Grattan next home. The final qualifier fell to another Norfolk driver, George Cooper from Ralph Payne and Jaxon York in an all-England top three.
The final was a superb race with all 35 karts taking the green flag this time. Cooper and York had a great battle out front, before Carberry surged past to the lead to take the win and successfully defend his crown. English drivers again dominated proceedings with Cooper in second followed by Finley Weston, Tyler Ward and York.
The Lightning Rods were contesting the final meeting of the 2024/25 NI Points Championship campaign, with Nigel Jackson doing his chances a power of good with the win in heat one over Stuart Agnew and Ross Houston. Mark Corry then took a controlled win in heat two ahead of Feargal McNally and Agnew, to leave the points title on a knife edge going into the final.
Corry led early on but it was Jackson who surged through to take the win in some style and with it the NI Points title, with Houston, Corry and Conor Doherty the placemen in the feature race.
The all action Thunder Rods completed the programme, with Brandon Kernohan hitting the front in heat one before he was removed for trailing bodywork. That left Mark McLaughlin out front until a superb outside pass by Adam McKinney saw him pip Mark to the win on the final lap. Heat two was a very ill-tempered affair, but this time McLaughlin held on all the way home to take the victory over James Goldie and Joshua McMullan.
The final was another scrappy but entertaining race, with Kernohan and then James Steele setting the pace. McLaughlin squeezed past Steele to the lead but in doing so caught the eye of the Stewards, and when he took the flag he was demoted two places to third in the final analysis. That handed victory to former Stock Rods star Joe Largey ahead of Steele.
