Latest Points Update - Goldie Takes Narrow Thunder Rods NI Points Victory

In our latest points update, standings have been published for Thunder Rods, 1300 Stock Cars and National Hot Rods.

After the final meeting in the N Purdy & Sons Thunder Rods 2020/21 NI Points Championship, Ballymena's James Goldie has successfully defended his silver roof by just 4 points after a season that has stretched right across the two shortened 2020/21 seasons. Dean Catherwood was a gallant runner up ahead of Samuel Murphy.

In the first regrading of the 2021/22 Autoweld NI Points Championship for 1300 Stock Cars, form man Thomas McCrory sets the early pace and with it earns a rise to the Superstar grade. Chris Hamill and Gareth Halliday are next up in the standings.

Finally, Glenn Bell continues to lead the Cirrus Plastics DMC Race Promotions National Hot Rods points chart which covers all National Hot Rod meetings across the calendar year. Derek Martin and Adam Hylands are second and third.

Cardwell & Martin Big Winners At Wet Aghadowey

Despite horrendous conditions at Aghadowey Oval on Saturday night, the drivers put on a fantastic show for the hardy race fans who braved the elements. Ballinderry’s Jonny Cardwell added the Irish Stock Rods Championship to the British title he won earlier in the season with a hard fought win, whilst Dungannon’s National Champion Derek Martin scored a heat and final double in the National Hot Rods. Other feature race wins fell to Portadown’s World Champion Nigel Jackson (Lightning Rods), Ballycastle star Andrew McLean (Thunder Rods) and young Loughgall ace Matthew Weir (Junior Productions).

Conditions were horrendous as a fine field of Stock Rods set off for their prestigious Irish Championship race. After an early caution period after front row starter Marc Morrell was left stranded mid track with mechanical woes, Randalstown’s Sam McNeice set the pace out front. Kells driver Shane McMillan then found a way past but as they encountered heavy backmarking traffic he had Jonny Cardwell and Joe Largey breathing down his neck. Cardwell found the gap he was chasing down the back straight and took up the running, racing home to the Irish title ahead of Largey and Stevie McNiece.
The reverse grid Irish Revenge race saw a fine drive from Ballymena’s Adam McFall net him the win over Dan Shannon and Morrell, after early leader Victor McAfee hit problems.

The elite National Hot Rods division were contesting round four of the Simpson Race Exhausts World Series NI, with Ian McReynolds leading until halfway in the opening heat before National Champion Derek Martin surged past to take the win over Shane Murray. McReynolds then made good his escape early in the second heat and held on for a morale boosting victory, with Martin this time the runner up.
In the 35-lap final McReynolds held sway out front until the halfway stage, where Martin scythed past to move clear. A late caution period as they entered the final stages closed the placemen together and put a whole different complexion on the last ten laps. Martin kept his cool however, retaining control to take the win ahead of Murray and Glenn Bell.

Returnee Ethan Dilly set the pace in the opening Lightning Rods heat, before World Champion and renowned rainmaster Nigel Jackson powered around the outside to take an outstanding win over Ally Neill. Neill then just held Jackson off to claim the heat two honours on the sodden circuit.
The final saw another masterclass from Jackson, as he gave a demonstration of wet weather driving to annihilate the field to complete his double for the evening. Mark McCambridge and Neill chased his home in the podium places.

Another big field of Thunder Rods saw the budget racers produce some close, competitive action, with Clifford Gordon and Andrew McLean disputing the heat one lead before Mark McLaughlin managed to nip past to take the win. From then on it was all about McLean, as Andrew made the most of his generous yellow grading to take the wins in both heat two and the final. Following him home in the feature race were Sam Preston and McLaughlin.

The young guns in the Junior Productions coped admirably with the wet conditions all evening. Dungannon lad Aaron Dynes scored a clear win in the opening heat over Matthew Weir and Sam Percy. Irish Open Champion Jack Morrow then took the win in heat two after demoting the impressive Lacey Bevan late on. The final saw Dynes out front early on but he had no opposition to the flying Weir, as Matthew soared past to take the silverware in some style ahead of Percy and Morrow.

Just The Job For Johnny In Hoosier Series Final

Garvagh’s Johnny McCloy was the toast of Aghadowey Oval on Saturday evening as he scooped victory in the Grand Final of the 2.0 Hot Rods Hoosier Tyres Series. It was a very enjoyable night of oval racing action, with Ballymena driver James Goldie another big winner as he claimed victory in the King of Aghadowey title for the Thunder Rods for the third year in a row.
Young Leyton Hughes was once again victorious in the Ninja Karts, with fellow Antrim man Stephen McCready the winner in the all-action 1300 Stock Cars. Nutts Corner racer Mark Crawford rounded out the victors with a faultless hat-trick in the Stock Rods.

Eighteen 2.0 Hot Rods saw an opening heat win for recent returnee Kris Fitzpatrick, the Lisburn man racing home ahead of Michael Woods and Johnny McCloy in a great finish. Fitzpatrick repeated the feat in heat two for another win, with Davy Kernohan and Woods this time the place men in what was a frantic and action packed encounter.
The Grand Final of the Hoosier Tyres Challenge Series saw McCloy on pole position courtesy of his points tally across the series with Drew McKeown alongside. Johnny controlled the race right from the off, pulling clear to take a fantastic win ahead of Wood and Gary Butler. The top three all received new race tyres courtesy of the series sponsors, Hoosier UK.

A fantastic entry of 25 Thunder Rods arrived to do battle for the King of Aghadowey title, with Portadown’s Sam Preston the heat one winner ahead of Andrew McLean and James Goldie. Heat two saw Mark McLaughlin and Jason Darragh battle out front before they tangled and lost out, opening the way for Ricky Bradley to take the win over Chris Baird and Adam Graham.
Ballymena men Graham and Goldie shared the front row for the final, with Graham losing out early on as he ran into mechanical issues. That left Goldie holding sway out front and he came home to land the King of Aghadowey crown for the third year in succession. Dean Catherwood just held off McLean after a great battle for second, with Preston and Baird rounding out the top places.

As has been the norm of late, the 1300 Stock Cars were spectacular all evening with three superb races. The bumpers were put to full use, with no quarter given and certainly none expected from the drivers! Gareth Halliday led early on in heat one before Jon McQuillan forced his way past to take the win, with Chris Hamill in third. Heat two once again saw the sparks flying, with Halliday this time taking victory over Michael Logan and Hamill.
The final really was something else, with places and the lead exchanged constantly throughout the duration. Halliday, Logan and Thomas McCrory all had a spell out front each, some on multiple occasions, but in the final shuffle it was Stephen McCready who broke free to take the silverware ahead of McQuillan and Hamill after a simply superb meeting from the formula.

A number of visitors joined the locals for the Ninja Karts Stars of Tomorrow Challenge, with Christian Murray taking the heat one win over Eevie Ford and Riley Dawson-Stirling. Murray completed the double with another win in heat two, this time with Ford and Ben Hawe in the places in a race which featured a huge rollover for Charlie Johnston.
Johnston bravely returned to the grid for the final after some great pit work, as Hawe led the way until a mid race yellow flag closed the field together. Hawe tried his best to hang on, but World Champion Leyton Hughes swept past to take the win and the trophy ahead of Scottish visitor Ford and Ryan Berry.

The Stock Rods once again produced some fantastic racing, but the results were all about former Junior Productions star Mark Crawford. Mark claimed both heat wins to earn an upgrade to the blue grade for the final, leading home an impressive Mark Foster and Victor McAfee in both races as the star men failed to make any impact.
The upgrade should have made things more difficult for Crawford in the final, but the talented teenager raced clear of his challengers, then outside McAfee and inside leader Foster to complete his faultless hat-trick for the evening. Foster and McAfee again completed the top three.

Latest Points Update - Ninja Karts and National Hot Rods

In our latest points update, the latest standings and regradings in the Cars Bought 24/7 Ninja Karts NI Points Championship have now been published. After four meetings Ryan Berry leads the standings ahead of World Champion Leyton Hughes, with just four points separating the duo.

Also updated have been the Cirrus Plastics DMC Points Championship standings for National Hot Rods after the British Championship weekend. Glenn Bell's excellent weekend sees him move ahead in the points chart, ahead of Adam Hylands & Derek Martin.

Successful Title Defences For Bell & Roots At Tullyroan Speedweekend

It was a weekend of successful title defences at Tullyroan Oval as the local race fans were treated to a fantastic event that featured the very best drivers from across the British Isles. Portadown’s Glenn Bell successfully defended his British Championship title in the elite National Hot Rods division, whilst English Superstox star Nick Roots retained his European Championship title in some style.

Bell also took victory in the Leslie Dallas Memorial trophy which netted hi a cool £1,000 prize money and four new race tyres, whilst World Champion Michael green continued was another to successfully defend a title, this time the Superstox Irish Open Championship.

An excellent entry from right across the British Isles gathered to contest the British Championship for the National Hot Rods, with first blood falling to Scotsman Robert McDonald. The current World Champion showed the rest the way home to take the win over Adam Hylands and Norfolk teenager Perry Cooke. Heat two saw Glenn Bell take the win in his Fiesta, holding off Derek Martin at the flag with Ben McKee third. After a Scottish and Ulster win, the English joined the fun in heat three as Oxfordshire’s Jason Kew took the honours over Gavin Murray and Dave Casey.

Bell and Martin shared the front row for the final with a blockbuster of a start seeing them all vying for the lead. Bell was in control though, with Martin slotting into second ahead of Hylands who had made a great run around the outside off the line. Bell kept control for the duration of the 45 lap event, holding off any surge from Martin to take the flag and retain his British title. Derek was a gallant runner up, with Hylands just holding off the attacking McDonald on the line.

Day two of the weekend saw the Leslie Dallas Memorial Trophy up for grabs, and it was Bell who was again claimed the honours, the magnificent trophy and a cool £1000 prize money. Hylands and Martin filled the places, the latter with an eye catching run around the outside over the closing laps.

A full field of 35 Superstox took to the track for the European Championship, and the action didn’t take long to start as World Champion Michael Green and local favourite Lee Davison both found themselves upside down before they had even taken the green flag in heat one! Both emerged unscathed as the heat wins fell to former World Champion John Mickel (twice) and Bangor’s Craig McConnell.

The European Championship final was then dominated by Nick Roots, as he powered ahead off the start to successfully defend his title, with Green staging a great comeback from his earlier rollover to land second ahead of Mickel for an all-English top three.

Sunday saw the Irish Open Championship up for grabs, and it was Green who retained that title ahead of Roots, with Augnacloy’s Kyle Beattie in third.

A whole host of support action took place over the two days, with the Classic Hot Rods seeing Scotland’s Graeme Callender claim the Irish Open Championship, whilst Anthony Morgan from the Republic of Ireland was victorious in the Jim Purdie Memorial Trophy.

The coveted Keir Millar Memorial Trophy for the Ninja Karts fell to newly crowned World Champion Leyton Hughes from Antrim ahead of Ryan Berry and English visitor Finley Kew. The 2.0 Hot Rods Irish Masters fell the way of Portadown’s Adam Heatrick after a commanding drive ahead of Ryan McCrory and Cork’s Ian Riordan.

The Stock Rods provided close action on Saturday evening as Glenavy’s Joe Largey took the win, whilst Portadown’s Dylan McCann completed a heat and final double in the Lightning Rods on Sunday.

Latest Points Update - Davison & McFaul Secure Points Championship Wins

In our latest points update, standings have been updated for Superstox, Thunder Rods & Rookie Bangers.

In the Mk2 Escort Shells & Spares Superstox NI Points Championship, 914 Lee Davison has successfully defended his title and goes forward to draw for pole position in the World Championship at Ipswich in October. Jamie McCann just pipped Kyle Beattie and Steven Haugh for second spot.

In the Rookie Bangers, William McFaul has taken victory in the DMC Race Promotions Points Championship ahead of Josh Goligher, and they will now turn their attentions to the World Final at Ipswich in November.

In the Thunder Rods, defending champion James Goldie has now edged ahead in the Norman Purdy & Sons NI Points Championship, ahead of Dean Catherwood and Samuel Murphy.

Josh Goligher Grabs Rookie Bangers Ulster Title

Limavady’s Josh Goligher came out on top in the Rookie Bangers Ulster Championship on Saturday night at Aghadowey Oval, the feature event of an excellent evening of Stock Car and Banger Racing.
Bangor’s Craig McConnell overcame a quality field of Superstox to claim the King of Aghadowey title, whilst young Jack Morrow from Rathfriland took the same crown in the Junior Productions after a great outside line drive. Thomas McCrory produced a superb last bend hit to take the final win in the 1300 Stock Cars final to complete a hat-trick for the night, whilst there was a dream debut for Rab Preston in the Thunder Rods as he took a heat and final double.

An excellent grid for a rare Aghadpwey Oval outing for the Rookie Bangers saw Josh Goligher take the win in the opening heat amidst a whole host of action on track. Lucas Goligher and William McFaul claimed the places. McFaul then came through in heat two to take the win over Ryan Nixon and Leonard Dunn, in a race which saw a stoppage for a big crash for Michael Smith on the pit bend.

The final saw the placemen from the heats start up front, and Josh Goligher edged clear in another race full of action all around the track. As he took the flag, Lucas Goligher made it a family affair by taking the runner up spot ahead of McFaul, the latter having lost out in a skirmish early in the race.

Just a week ahead of their European Championship being staged in the province, a fine field of twenty Superstox gathered to contest their King of Aghadowey title. Brian Lammey and Conor Murphy had turns out front in the opening heat, before Ed Davis raced through to take the win over Murphy and rapid debutant Curtis Greer. Heat two again saw Murphy spend quite a spell out front before this time Craig McConnell worked his way past to take the win over Greer and Jordan Robinson.

The final was lined up in points order, with Davis on pole position and Greer alongside. Davis made the perfect start to pull well clear of McConnell in second, with Craig then gradually reeling in the leader over the duration of the race. He made his move with just three laps to go, edging Davis wide into the Brown Trout Bend to take the win. Davis took a creditable second ahead of Greer, Steven Haugh and Robinson.

Lacey Bevan enjoyed a spell out front in the opening Juniors Production heat, before Abbie McKinstry pulled ahead to take the win over Stewart Hanna and Declan O’Connor. Heat two saw Aaron Dynes take the win after on the road winner Jack Morrow was docked two places for contact. Bevan took a creditable runner up spot, which was enough to earn herself pole position for the final alongside Hanna.

An early skirmish in the final saw McKinstry crash out, leaving O’Connor in the lead ahead of Sam Percy. Morrow really had the bit between his teeth in this one, pulling right around the difficult outside line to take an absolutely fantastic victory. Percy, O’Connor and Matthew Weir were next home.

The 1300 Stock Cars were simply spectacular all evening, with the bumpers put to good use in each and every race. Thomas McCrory had his new car on fine form as he took the opener ahead of Gareth Halliday and Jon McQuillan, the places decided after a huge last bend sort out. There was a big hit for Jack Kennedy in heat two as he was unceremoniously dumped in the wall on the Brown Trout Bend, as McCrory again took the flag over Matthew Milliken and Stephen McCready.

The final saw some great racing early on, with both blows and places exchanged. McCready worked his way ahead, but he soon has McCrory tracking his every move, even with the double heat winner’s rise to the red grade for the feature race. McCrory waited to the very last bend, launching an attack on McCready that took both out to the wall. They raced to the line side-by-side, with McCrory just getting the verdict, and the hat-trick, by the smallest of margins. McCready was a gallant runner up ahead of Robbie Wright in third.

The Thunder Rods again saw a very healthy field take to the track, which made things very difficult for the star men starting at the back of the grid. Debutant Rab Preston raced clear for a dream start to his career by taking the win in the opening heat, ahead of Samuel Murphy and Ricky Bradley. Bradley, in only his second outing on the ovals, then took the win in the second heat ahead of Murphy and Preston.

Preston made a lightning start to the final, quickly demoting his fellow novice graders to quickly build up a healthy lead. It was a lead he wouldn’t lose, and he raced home to take the silverware in style over Murphy and the rapid Dean Catherwood.

Latest Points Update - Jackson Retains Lightning Rods NI Points Championship

Our latest points update sees the final standings in the Ryan Wright Signs & Embroidery NI Points Championship for Lightning Rods being published.

World Champion 902 Nigel Jackson has retained his title, finishing a toughly fought campaign 40 points ahead of 913 Ricky Shaw. 917 Aaron Stewart, 996 James McKinney and 916 Mark Corry were next up. The drivers will now begin their final preparations for the World Championship at Ipswich Spedeweekend later this month.

Successful Cooke Memorial Defence For Cardwell

Jonny Cardwell continued his rich vein of form with a successful defence of the coveted William Cooke Memorial Trophy at Aghadowey on Saturday night. The Ballinderry Stock Rod star, crowned British Champion just a fortnight ago, scooped a heat and final double to land the superb silverware. The meeting also saw a first ever final win for Donegal's Trevor McConnell in the 2.0 Hot Rods, whilst the other feature race winners were Dungannon's Ally Neill (Lightning Rods), local Aghadowey driver Ricky Bradley (Thunder Rods) and Meath's Declan O'Connor (Junior Productions).

Held annually in memory of the ace engineer and former driver from Kilrea, the William Cooke Memorial Trophy is a highly coveted award on the local scene. Qualifying heat victories fell the way of former World Champion Marc Morrell and Jonny Cardwell, the latter also scoring well in his other heat to land pole position for the final alongside Mark Crawford.
Crawford initially put Cardwell under some pressure in the final, but Jonny edged clear as the race settled down. Crawford did put up quite a fight as the race progressed, but Cardwell had more than enough in reserve to take the flag and successfully defend his title with Crawford a gallant runner up. Next home were Shane McMillan, Sam McNeice and Adam McFall.

A healthy field of 2.0 Hot Rods took to the grid, with the heats shared between Michael Woods and the returning Thomas Dilly.
The final saw Trevor McConnell, who had earlier lost the first heat win to a penalty, set the pace out front. He was tracked by returnee to the formula Thomas Dilly in his new RCE built car, with Thomas in turn holding off spirited challenges from Adam Heatrick and Ryan McCrory. McCrory was the one to show best however, as he clawed his way past Dilly to set off after the leader as the laps dwindled down. Ryan got right alongside McConnell on the run to the line, but it was a delighted Trevor who took his first ever victory on the ovals.

Mark Corry made good use of his blue grading to grab both heat wins in the Lightning Rods division, the Portadown man automatically elevating himself back to the star grade for the feature race of the night.
Ally Neill quickly hit the front in the final, but he was soon chased down by Mark McCambridge, with Corry and Stuart Agnew joining in the scrap soon after. McCambridge just couldn’t pull off the pass on Neill, before Corry almost made it past too. Mark was oh so close to getting ahead, but Neill held on resolutely to take a hard earned win over McCambridge and James McKinney in a blanket finish.

The Thunder Rods were all about local Aghadowey debutant Ricky Bradley, as he claimed both heat wins from the novice grade in some style.
An upgrade for the final was always going to make things much more difficult for Bradley, but he soon worked his way into contention once again. A late caution period saw leader Paddy Hannigan excluded for not obeying yellow flags and jumping the restart, and that opened the door for Bradley to complete his hat-trick on what became a dream debut on the ovals. Samuel Murphy, Chrissy Dempsey and Brendan Doherty filled the top places.

Declan O’Connor made the long haul from Co Meath worthwhile with victory in the opening Junior Productions heat, before Aaron Dynes claimed a great win in the second heat from the white grade. Lacey Bevan had a spell out front in the final, but O’Connor was the man on form as he swooped past to race clear for a popular victory. As Declan completed his double for the evening, Jack Morrow took second ahead of Stewart Hanna, Sam Percy and Matthew Weir.

16 Mike Flaherty has been crowned 2020/21 DMC Race Promotions National Bangers Points Champion after last Saturday's exciting meeting at Tullyroan Oval. Mike finished the shortened season three points ahead of 215 Leonard Dunn, and both secure their places at the World Final in Ipswich in October.

In the Superstox, their latest regrading has been published with 914 Lee Davison holding a healthy lead at the top of the Mk2 Escort Shells & Spares NI Points Championship. 955 Kyle Beattie holds second spot ahead of 907 Jamie McCann and 943 Steven Haugh.

In the National Hot Rods Cirrus Plastics DMC Race Promotions Championship which runs across the calendar year at all meetings, 54 Adam Hylands now leads 9 Glenn Bell, 962 John Christie, 70 Shane Murray and 20 Derek Martin.

Big Wins For McCurdy & Davison at Tullyroan Oval

Broughshane’s Jaimie McCurdy put his recent run of poor form firmly behind him with a decisive victory in the National Hot Rods Final at Tullyroan Oval on Saturday night. On a night of great racing, there was an emotional victory for Lee Davison as he won his brother Neil’s Memorial Cup in the Superstox, whilst Dublin’s Jonathan Compelli took the honours in the 2L National Bangers Tullyroan Challenge Cup.
A great race for the lead in the Ninja Karts Tullyroan Challenge Cup saw Antrim’s Leyton Hughes just snatch the win, whilst Glenavy’s Mark McCambridge took the honours in a controversial Lightning Rods final.

The very healthy Ulster National Hot Rod scene was bolstered by yet another new recruit, Antrim’s Dean McCrory, for Round 3 of Simpson Race Exhausts World Series NI. Scotsman Barry Stephen drew first blood with victory in the opening heat over Carl Sloan, before Ian McReynolds led them all home for a fine heat two victory over European Champion Shane Murray and Simon Kennedy.
Stephen set a great pace at the start of the final, but soon had Jaimie McCurdy chasing his tail as they headed towards half distance. Sloan was right there too, as was Murray until the latter was eliminated by the Stewards for a loose door on his Ginetta. McCurdy powered clear out front as Stephen faltered, Jaimie taking the chequered flag for a morale boosting victory over Sloan and Adam Hylands.

The first running of the Neil Davison Memorial Cup for Superstox saw a fine grid take to the track, including former World Champion Barry Stephen who doubled up with the National Hot Rods to give himself a very busy evening! James Stewart was the star man during the heats, the sixteen-year-old racing clear to claim victory in both to qualify on the pole position for the final. In the opening heat he bumpered Conor Murphy wide on the final lap to take the lead, before a more decisive win in heat two.
The setting was dramatic under the floodlights as the cars came to grid for the first running of the event, held in memory of the former racer who sadly passed away a year ago through illness. Stewart was spun off straight away as the green flag came out, as Neil’s brother and British Champion Lee Davison powered ahead. A huge crash in the main pack brought out the yellow flags, and at the resumption Davison again eased ahead to land an emotional win that visibly meant so much to him. It was the perfect result with a family one-two as Jordan Robinson came through to the runner up slot, ahead of Stephen in third.

There was some frantic action during the 2L National Bangers Tullyroan Challenge Cup race, with some huge hits handed out all around the circuit. Jonathan Compelli broke clear early on to move ahead, with second man Leonard Dunn eliminated late in the race on the home straight. As Jonathan took the win, his brother Paul Compelli came through for runner up ahead of Paul Stafford.
The Allcomers race was another hard hitting affair, with Dunn somehow managing to return to the grid after some sterling efforts in the pit area. He even had a spell out front early on before Mike Flaherty took over, but it was Jonny Murdock who got the win at the flag over Stevo McGrath. The Destruction Derby again saw Dunn take to the grid when it had looked as though his day was over, and he played his part in a great event with McGrath and Murdock. McGrath got the verdict and the win at the death with Dunn’s heroics, both on and off track, earning him the Entertainer of the Day.

A four car battle right to the line in a fantastic Ninja Kart opener saw Ryan Abernethy just get the verdict ahead of Ryan Berry and Noah Teggart, before newly crowned British Champion Leyton Hughes won the second heat with Berry and Teggart the placemen once again.
The Tullyroan Challenge Cup final turned into a tremendous dice between Hughes and Berry, with absolutely nothing between them all the way. They swapped the lead time and again, but it was Hughes who got ahead when it mattered to take the win despite Berry’s best efforts on the final turn. Ryan should be very proud of his efforts, as the ‘Ninja Master’ Leyton added yet another trophy to his collection.

A very good entry of Lightning Rods was boosted by welcome visitor Adrian Gleeson from Tipperary, with Mark Corry making good use of his drop to blue grade with a fine heat one victory over Ally Neill. Neill then went one better in heat two, taking the chequered flag in front of Ronan McNally and European Champion Aaron Stewart after a great run around the outside line.
Peter Wehrly and then Dylan McCann had spells out front in the final, before Corry’s speed carried him onto the tail of the leading car. Mark worked his way onto the outside line chasing the lead but McCann totally misjudged his line out onto the back straight and ran Corry up the wall and out of the race. McCann too had damage, and that took him out of the race before the Stewards could intervene. Suddenly Mark McCambridge found himself ahead, and he withstood late pressure from Aaron Stewart to take a win that looked so unlikely only a few laps previously.
