Conditions were nothing short of atrocious at Aghadowey Oval on Friday night with Storm Arwen bringing in gale force winds and heavy, wintery showers. The drivers coped admirably on track, with Irish Championship titles falling to Portadown duo Nigel Jackson (Lightning Rods) and Jordan Robinson (Superstox), whilst Chris Hamill from Gawley’s Gate and Garvagh’s Dean Catherwood also tasted Irish title glory in the 1300 Stock Cars and Thunder Rods respectively. The supporting Stock Rods saw a final win for Kells driver Shane McMillan.

With conditions as bad as could be expected, grip was at a premium as the Lightning Rods set off for the Irish Championship race. Pole sitter Nigel Jackson just couldn’t get the power down as Ricky Shaw edged ahead with Ally Neill following him through. Jackson isn’t World Champion for no reason, and he soon settled down and swooped right around the outside to take up the running.
As Nigel edged clear to take his eighth Lightning Rods Irish title, Neill and Mark McCambridge came through to complete the podium. McCambridge then went on to win the Irish Revenge race from Jackson and Shaw.

A fantastic grid of Superstox set off for their Irish title race, with Lee Davison settling into the lead whilst Jordan Robinson headed a squabbling pack on the slippery surface. Robinson managed to break clear and chase down the leader, edging Davison wide with just four laps to go to take up the running.
As Robinson took a fantastic and well deserved title victory, Davison and Kyle Beattie completed the podium finishers. The reverse grid Irish Revenge race saw a fantastic battle between Craig McConnell, Beattie and Robinson, with Jordan again coming out on top to record his second win of the evening.

Polesitter Chris Hamill got shunted wide in a dramatic opening lap of the 1300 Stock Cars Irish Championship, with Jon McQuillan and then Robbie Wright having spells out front. Hamill was coming back strong though, and he bided his time before making the perfect move on the final bend to dislodge Wright from the lead and take a great win. Joining the duo on the Irish title podium was Gareth Halliday who took a creditable third. The Irish Revenge support race then also fell the way of Hamill after a great battle amongst the pack.

The Thunder Rods Irish Championship was an eagerly awaited event, with so many possible contenders. Samuel Murphy led early on ahead of Dean Catherwood and defending champion James Goldie. The slightest slip from Murphy in the treacherous conditions saw Catherwood and Goldie move through, and despite Goldie’s best efforts to retain his title it was Catherwood who stormed home to take the Irish crown and the right to wear the green roof for the next twelve months. Goldie and Murphy completed the podium, before Simon McLaughlin took the Irish Revenge race ahead of Catherwood and Andrew McLean.

The Stock Rods were a late addition to the programme and it was Ballymena stalwart Victor McAfee who took the opening heat win, before Ballymoney’s Thomas Morrison took heat two in what was a blanket finish after a great race amongst the frontrunners. The final saw a lot of oil go down on the already slippery surface after a huge engine blow up for Michael Rodgers, with Kells star Shane McMillan coping best to take the victory over Jonny Cardwell and Morrison.

Following the postponement of the recent Aghadowey Oval meeting, this has now been rescheduled for 𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐭 𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐍𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟐𝟔𝐭𝐡. That means we'll have racing on both Friday and Saturday next week, with Tullyroan Oval also staging an attractive Saturday night meeting. There will now be no less than SIX Irish titles up for grabs across the two nights!

At Aghadowey Oval on Friday 26th, the Junior Productions which were on the original fixture have been dropped as their Irish Championship takes place the following day, whilst the Stock Rods have been added in their place for an extra fixture.

It also means the Superstox, the stars of the DMC season in many eyes, will be in action at both meetings - for the Irish Championship on Friday and then the Tullyroan Challenge Cup on Saturday.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause, but the changes have been due to circumstances beyond our control.

We hope both drivers and race fans will join us next weekend for our double header, with the Ninja Karts Champion of Champions event at Tullyroan already having a large number of mainland UK visitors booked in.

A fantastic night of racing under the floodlights at Tullyroan Oval on Saturday evening saw some great battles for the major titles on offer. Portadown driver Jordan Rochford took a great win in the 2.0 Hot Rods Irish Championship, with young Kilmore ace Ryan Berry also tasting Irish Championship success in the Ninja Karts. Another Portadown star, Glenn Bell, was victorious in the National Hot Rods Ulster Championship after Dungannon’s Derek Martin had taken the win in Round 5 of Simpson Race Exhausts World Series NI. Other winners on the night were Portadown’s Nigel Jackson in the Lightning Rods and Enniskillen’s Stevie McNiece in the Stock Rods.

A full field of 2.0 Hot Rods came to grid for their 2021 Irish Championship, which didn’t get far before a caution period on lap two after pole-sitter Gary Butler had clashed controversially with Adam Heatrick. On the resumption Jordan Rochford stamped his authority all over the 30-lap event to take a fine victory, with the emotional scenes afterwards showing just what it meant to him and his team. Denver Grattan impressed in second after a good run, ahead of defending champion Adam Best.
The reverse grid Irish Revenge race saw a clear win for Adam Hylands, with Feargal McNally and Conor Hughes next home, the latter after a great outside line run.

World Champion Leyton Hughes and Ryan Berry shared the front row for the Ninja Karts 2021 Irish Championship, and the race quickly became a battle between the pair. The lead swapped early on, and then Berry clawed himself a few kart lengths of a gap out front. Hughes came with a late charge to close in, but Berry had all under control and took the biggest win of his career in some style as he was crowned Irish Champion. Hughes was excellent value in second ahead of Riley Dawson-Stirling, Ryan Abernethy and Noah Teggart after a great places battle too.

The reverse grid Irish Revenge saw a deserved win for Cullybackey’s Keegan Turtle after first across the line Hughes was docked two places for contact by the Stewards. That elevated Caolan Fegan to second with Hughes having to make do with third.

Round five of Simpson Race Exhausts World Series NI saw local star Thomas Dilly take both heat victories as the National Hot Rods looked sensational at full speed under the lights. Barry Stephen and Simon Kennedy followed him home in heat one, before Kennedy and Andrew Stewart filled the places in heat two. The extended distance in the feature race final was always going to bring the star men into play, and early leader Dilly had no answer to the flying Derek Martin and Glenn Bell who had scythed through the pack together. Martin held on for an impressive win over Bell, John Christie and Shane Murray.
The final race of the night for the National Hot Rods was the 2021 Ulster Championship, lined up on lap time order from during the night and featuring the ‘choose-cone’ rule at 5 laps to go. Bell set the pace from the off with Martin in second ahead of Christie and Murray. At the choose cone caution period Martin dramatically decided to go outside and come up alongside Bell for the 5 lap dash to the flag. A sensational few laps followed, but Bell hung on to add the Ulster to his British title won at the same track earlier in the month. Martin kept him honest in second ahead of Christie, Murray and Jaimie McCurdy.

The Lightning Rods saw Ally Neill take the opening heat win after an early battle with Mark Corry, with Nigel Jackson taking second in the end over Ronan McNally. Heat two fell to newly crowned British Champion Ricky Shaw, with Jackson again impressing on his way to second over Mark McCambridge.
The Tullyroan Challenge Cup Final saw Jackson on pole, and he would never be challenged all the way to yet another win for the World Champ. Neill impressed too in second, ahead of McNally, Ethan Dilly and Dylan McCann.

Some fantastic Stock Rod racing completed the programme, with former World Champion Stevie McNiece taking the opening heat win over Ryan Andersen and Marc Morrell, after Hannah Mongahan had led for much of the distance. Rapid young star Mark Crawford took the heat two spoils ahead of Mark Overend and McNiece.
The final was another superb race, with Overend setting the pace for much of the distance before McNiece powered past on the outside line in a super move. As Stevie took the chequered flag, Overend had a morale boosting second over Dan Shannon and Jonny Cardwell.
