Some super racing warmed up the healthy crowd at a chilly Tullyroan Oval on Sunday, with the fans treated to some great entertainment from the five formulas on display. The feature race of the day was the Tullyroan Challenge Cup for the 2L National Bangers which fell the way of Stephen Doyle, whilst Andrew Hawe took a sensational if surprising win in the Ninja Karts Individual Achievement Award. The Champion of Champions event for the young stars saw Max Hobson card a creditable victory, whilst other winners at the meeting, sponsored by Hollytree Rare Breeds Farm, Midway Autopoint and Stirling Trophies, were Nigel Jackson (Lightning Rods), Adrian McKinstry (Superstox) and Dan Shannon (ProStocks).

The 2L National Bangers saw some excellent commitment from World Champion Steven Bolton, Irish Champion Leonard Dunn and Dublin's Stevo McGrath, as all three took to the grid having raced in Birmingham the previous evening. The action was fast and furious right from the off with some excellent action all around the circuit. As the big hits went in around them, local ace Willy Ogilby and Dunn disputed the lead for some time until Ogilby's challenge faltered late on. Stephen Doyle came into contention late on, sending Dunn wide to steal through and land the title in some style!
Bolton, McGrath and Marty McKiernan were involved in some heavy action early in the Allcomers event, which eventually saw Paul Compelli hold off a spirited late challenge from Bolton to take the honours. The Destruction Derby was another keenly fought contest, boiling down to a shoot out between Paul Compelli, Jonathan Compelli, Dunn and Rodney Herron. All four tried their best to eliminate the opposition, with Jonathan Compelli getting the nod as last car running. Dunn's consolation was the Best Wreck of the Day trophy, with McKiernan voted Best Entertainer.

The opening Ninja Kart race was for the Midway Autopoint Individual Achievement Award, open to those who hadn't won a race in 2017. It turned into a fantastic five way battle between Rhea McConkey, Odhran Monaghan, Andrew Hawe, Lauren Berry and Ryan Berry as they all chased their first ever chequered flag. McConkey held sway out front as the end approached, only to tangle with Monaghan and spin out. Monaghan unfortunately has to be penalised by Race Control for the incident, which handed the victory to Hawe in only his second ever meeting! Lauren Berry recovered from a spin to grab second, with her brother Ryan in third.
The Champion of Champions event for the 2017 race winners followed, with the local runners joined by Scotland's Charlie Hardie. A great high-speed battle ensued, with Max Hobson rounding off his excellent first season with a fine victory over Daniel Stewart and Jack Morrow after a terrific encounter.
The following heat saw a deserved win for Hardie, as the Scottish Points Champion powered home ahead of Stewart Hanna and Brandon Litter. The meeting final saw Ryan Berry make an excellent start to lead early on. He lost out to a flying Morrow, who raced home to the silverware despite the very close attentions of Stewart over the final laps.

The Lightning Rods coped admirably with what was a very greasy track all day, with former ProStocks World Champion Tam Agnew first over the line in the opening heat, only to fall foul of the Race Stewards for jumping a restart. That elevated Portadown's Vince Litter to the victory over European Champion Jordan Rochford. The second heat was a fantastic race, with Agnew again the pacesetter until challenged by Mark McCambridge. Mark used the wide outside line to charge ahead, only to have Rochford repeat the move on him to grab the victory.
The feature race final again saw Agnew out front, until challenge by Irish Champion Nigel Jackson. Nigel swooped ahead in what are his favoured conditions, but Ricky Shaw was on fine form too as he sported a lovely new paint scheme on his car. Ricky tried every move he knew to find a way past, but Nigel was equal to it all and came home for an excellent victory over Shaw and Agnew.

The opening Superstox heat saw a great drive from the back of the field to take the flag for Lee Davison. It was a commanding performance from the Portadown ace, as he led home Sean Mark and James Turkington. Heat two saw Londonderry's Greg Hyndman continue his recent good form with another win, again with Mark and Turkington filling the places.
David Beattie led for much of the distance in the final, the novice grader putting in a really good drive. Returnee to the formula Adrian McKinstry scrambled onto terms with Beattie, surging ahead to land a telling victory in some style indeed. Mark's move on Beattie for second on the last bend saw both in the wall and out of contention, opening the door for Stephen Stewart to take the runner up slot ahead of Turkington.

The local ProStocks stars were joined by welcome Scottish visitors Jason McAlpine, Darren Rae and Wullie Hardie, the latter of course a current multi-champion in the 2.0 Hot Rods. William Donnell set the early heat one pace before being relegated by flying Irish Champion Dan Shannon. Dan swapped the lead with Stephen Boyd, before Boyd went in with a last bender which sensationally opened the door for William McFaul to nip through to grab the chequered flag and the win. Heat two saw a determined win for Hardie, the Scotsman putting his previous Stock Rod experience to good use to take the win in the unfamiliar front wheel drive category. Shannon ran him close in second, with Joe Largey in third.

With the main 2017 season behind us, we have updated all the Lap Records for both Aghadowey Oval and Tullyroan Oval. Only a few of the standards were bettered during the year, with Clive Richardson beating the Classic Hot Rods benchmark at both circuits in his rapid Mk2 Escort. Denver Grattan's Zetec powered Superstox lowered the record at Aghadowey by shaving 4/1000th's of a second off the previous best, whilst young hotshot Daniel Stewart took almost a tenth of a second off the Ninja Karts record at Tullyroan.

To view the DMC Race Promotions Lap Records click on the link below, and remember all the timings from all our meetings are available on the MYLaps Speedhive website.
